Connect to the same Wi-Fi
Make sure both your laptop and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network. This is required for the connection to work.
Scan the QR code with your phone
Open your phone camera and point it at the QR code on the dashboard. Tap the link — your phone browser opens and the camera starts automatically.
Start streaming
Once connected, the live feed appears on the dashboard. The status indicator will show PHONE CONNECTED.
Control the camera from your laptop

Record video
Press Start Recording. Recording saves to your phone at full quality. Press stop when done.
Reduce latency
If lag builds up, click Restart Stream at the bottom left of the video panel to reset the buffer back to real-time.
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi
5 GHz has lower interference and higher bandwidth than 2.4 GHz. Connect both devices to the 5 GHz band for best performance.
Keep the phone screen on
Camcastar uses a wake lock to prevent sleep. If the screen turns off, the stream may pause.
It started with a simple problem.
I was recording myself and had no idea if the frame, lighting, or camera angle looked right. I’d hit record, walk into position, then walk back to check. Most of the time I was either out of frame or something looked off. So I’d adjust everything and repeat the whole process again and again.
My phone has a great camera. It's always in my pocket. But every solution out there wanted me to download an app, create an account, pay a subscription, or deal with setups that break for no reason. For something that should just work.
So I built Camcastar.
Open the dashboard on your laptop. Scan the QR code with your phone. That's it. Your phone becomes a live wireless camera on your screen. No app. No login. No cable. Completely free.
You can see exactly what your phone sees, adjust the angle, switch lenses, control zoom and focus, change FPS and resolution, and manage everything directly from your laptop.
When you record, the video saves to both your phone and your laptop. Full quality on the phone, with a backup on the laptop.
I built this for myself. Then I realized others probably have the same problem. So I made it available for everyone.
We don’t collect your recordings, camera feed, or personal data. Your stream stays between your devices, and your videos remain yours.
If something breaks, if you have an idea, or just want to say hi — I actually read my messages.
